Team Canada is one step closer to realizing its World Cup dreams.

The Canadian men’s senior national soccer team downed the United States 2-0 on Sunday and then downed El Salvador on Wednesday to remain unbeaten in 2022 World Cup qualifying. Sunday was the country’s first qualifying win against the United States — ranked No. 11 in the world — since 1980.

But more importantly, the victories inched Canada closer to its first World Cup appearance since 1986.

And yes, World Cup soccer betting and wagers on next month’s qualifying games will be available in many parts of the country.

And after the private sports betting markets launch on April 4 for Ontario, soccer betting will be among the highlights.

Team Canada inching closer to securing historic World Cup bid

At 7-0-4, Canada stands atop the CONCACAF region in World Cup classification with 25 points.

The top three teams receive an automatic berth to the sport’s biggest event – which will be held in Qatar beginning in November.

Meanwhile, the fourth-placed team will receive a play-in match against a team from the Oceania region.

Here’s how the top of the table looks (win-loss-draw) with three games remaining in the qualifying round:

  1. Canada: 7-0-4 (25 points)
  2. USA: 6-2-3 (21 points)
  3. Mexico: 6-2-3 (21 points)
  4. Panama: 5-4-2 (17 points)

Ontario bettors can place wagers on World Cup run at Proline Plus

Barring a complete collapse, Canada should make history and qualify for international soccer’s biggest stage.

But there’s no time to rejoice and reflect yet.

There are still three more matches to go.

The Ontario Lottery Gaming and Corporation’s sportsbook, Proline Plus, offers betting markets for World Cup qualifying including CONCACAF.

For now, Proline Plus is the only legal Ontario sports betting option in the province. Similarly, PlayAlberta was offering identical odds for customers of the Alberta, Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis betting product.

Canada was the heavy favourites against El Salvador entering the match. After all, Canada essentially just has to hold the fort at this point to qualify for Qatar and draws in the three remaining away games would certainly keep the train moving.

Canada’s remaining qualifying schedule features bottom half of the table

Following the El Salvador matchup, Canada has three remaining games for its road to Qatar.

They include:

  • At Costa Rica, March 24
  • Vs. Jamaica, March 27
  • At Panama, March 30

Bettors will be able to take their stab at the outcome of each when odds become available on Proline Plus in the coming months.
