With the growth in popularity of standardbred racing in the 1960s, the Ontario Jockey Club announced plans to build a new harness racing facility in southern Ontario. Mohawk Racetrack was opened in April of 1963, with more than 4,000 attending the first meet.

Recognition of the support, sovereignty, history and culture of the Mohawk nation and its people played into naming the venue. The project was completed at a cost of $3.5 million. It includes barns for 828 horses and parking for 3,000 cars.
