When you first see China Shores, it appears to be a plain and simple Asian-themed slot title. When you take it for a spin, the solid gameplay and quirky features will quickly show you why this game is considered a classic. Konami slot machines share a special way of stacking symbols. These will come into their own when you trigger the free spins – when all your wins are doubled.

The setting for China Shores is a serene lake in a bamboo forest. Strangely, this appears on top of the reels. Look out for the rapidly rotating Panda symbols – which will connect wins over multiple lines.

You will find China Shores in cabinets which offer a choice of Konami slots. This is often found alongside popular games like Dragon’s Law Twin Fever and Solstice Celebration. Bigger casinos including Casino de Montreal or Parx Vancouver offer Konami slots in individual cabinets.

China Shores: choose cash or free spins in the main bonus feature

You need to hit the bonus features on a win line to trigger the free spins. They show a classic yin yang symbol and often appear stacked. If you hit multiple lines, you can win a lot of free spins in the triggering spin. There are eight, twelve or fifteen free spins for three, four or five on a line.

Next, you see a big set of scales and get to choose between a cash prize or free spins. The cash prize can be anything between 40 credits and 3,195,000 credits – depending on how many spins you are cashing in. You can also ‘cash in’ your remaining free spins by hitting the ‘balance of fortune’ icon while they are running. You need a minimum of twenty spins remaining to do this.

If you do go for the free spins bonus, you get double the regular win amounts while the feature is running. The yin yang symbols are still in play – making retriggers possible.

Action stacked symbols system

China Shores shares the Action Stacked Symbols system with many other Konami slots. You will notice that one symbol will often dominate the reels on each spin. The system works by filling a lot of blank spaces on each reel with a random symbol on each spin. This can be a wild, bonus trigger symbol or any of the regular symbols.

Your bigger wins will come when you fill many (or even all) of the 30 win-lines with the same symbol. This system is used in both the base game and the free spins.

Setup: how the China Shores slots work

You will see line markers highlighting 30 win-lines around the reels. This number is fixed for China Shores. You can spin from 30c and up. For bigger bets, you can either bet multiple coins per line, or you can switch to a bigger denomination.

The ‘Menu’ button brings up a list of options including Turbo mode. This speeds up your spins and skips the animations for wins. You can also toggle the sounds on and off or visit the paytable and instructions via this menu.

Panda symbols are wild. They connect wins, though as they only appear on reels two through five, can’t create wins on their own. The highest paying regular symbols show golden Chinese characters over a red background. These are worth 1,000 coins for five of a kind. If you cover all the reels with them this is the top prize of 30,000 coins (60,000 during the free spins).

High-paying symbols are completed by a golden pig, ornate vase, and a traditional red lantern. Six brightly coloured playing card symbols are the lower-paying/filler symbols.

As well as triggering the free spins bonus, yin yang scatter symbols pay up to 100x your triggering bet as a scatter prize.

Tranquil lakes and rotating pandas: China Shores slots design

Konami slots have a distinctive set of sounds and can be easily identified visually via the Action Stacked Symbols system. China Shores has an older design, with plain graphics for the symbols compared to their more recent titles.

Either side of the reels is the dark of a bamboo forest. There is a lake above the reels, showing a traditional boat with multiple jagged sails. On the reels, the panda symbols stand out. This simply looks like a panda’s face most of the time. When it gets involved in a win, it rapidly rotates – creating a quirky look to the game.

The other symbols are static, with win-lines branching out after each spin. Sound effects are straight from the Konami library. You get sharp clicks, electronic beeps and (if you hit a big win) then you will hear some classical music.

Wrapping up: should you take China Shores slots for a spin?

This slot has been developed into new games. There is a ‘Great Stacks’ version with bigger reels and more free spins, plus a ‘4-Play’ version where you spin four sets of reels at the same time. You can also play China Shores in an online slot format.

While the graphics are on the plain side, and this slot only has a single feature, it is certainly worth at least one session. China Shores is classic Konami, it has its stacks, high volatility gameplay and an unusual range of sights and sounds.

There is plenty of big win potential in China Shores. You can choose credits instead of free spin – or take your shot at those spins with doubled wins.
