Can I Use a VPN to Gamble in Alberta?

Alberta’s regulated sportsbooks and casinos run on strict geolocation checks — and a VPN won’t get you past them. Here’s how location verification actually works, and what happens if yours can’t be confirmed.

With Alberta’s regulated iGaming market now live, players across Canada can access dozens of licensed sportsbooks and online casinos. But you’re logging in from outside Alberta, and a VPN seems like the obvious workaround.

A VPN can change your IP address. However, it doesn’t override the geolocation systems licensed operators use to verify where you’re physically located. Under the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission’s (AGLC) Standards and Requirements for Internet Gaming, operators must verify a player’s physical location in Alberta before allowing them to gamble.

Why VPNs don’t work in Alberta

Using a VPN isn’t simply discouraged in Alberta’s regulated market. Licensed Alberta sportsbooks and casinos are required to detect and block VPNs as part of the province’s geolocation rules.

The AGLC requires operators to restrict participation to players physically located in Alberta. If a player’s location cannot be confirmed, operators must prevent wagering.

The standards also require operators to detect and block common methods used to bypass these controls, including VPNs and other location-masking technologies such as proxy servers, remote desktop software, and virtual machines.

In practice, using a VPN won’t let you bypass Alberta’s geolocation requirements.

Your physical location matters

Each province licenses its own operators and determines who can legally offer real-money gambling within its borders.

Your account location and home address don’t matter. What counts is your physical location when you place a bet.

Alberta’s standards require operators to restrict play to people physically located in the province, except in cases of interprovincial government partnerships. Commercial operators currently only accept wagers from players within Alberta. However, the provision leaves room for future interprovincial arrangements if regulators introduce them.

How Alberta verifies your location

Most regulated gambling operators don’t rely on a single method to verify a player’s location. Instead, they typically combine several forms of geolocation technology, including:

  • GPS data from your mobile device
  • Wi-Fi network information
  • IP address analysis
  • Device and browser location services

Using multiple signals makes it much more difficult to bypass location checks with a VPN alone.

Location verification also doesn’t necessarily end when you log in. Alberta’s standards require operators to periodically reconfirm a player’s location during gameplay. If the system can no longer verify you’re physically inside the province, your gaming session may be stopped.

What happens if you use a VPN

If Alberta operators detect VPN use or cannot verify your location, you’ll typically be unable to place wagers.

Depending on the operator and the circumstances, you may experience:

  • A failed location verification
  • A blocked betting session
  • Temporary restrictions until your location can be confirmed
  • A request to disable your VPN and retry

The standards require licensed operators to allow betting only within approved jurisdictions. Attempts to bypass geolocation controls may also be treated as a breach of an operator’s terms and conditions.

Depending on the operator, repeated attempts could result in limited account access or account suspension.

Wagering while outside Alberta

Online gambling in Canada is regulated on a provincial basis. As a result, an Alberta-licensed operator cannot simply accept wagers from players located elsewhere in Canada.

Say you have an Alberta account but travel to British Columbia, Manitoba, or another province. You generally won’t be able to place wagers through that account. It’s possible only when the operator is also licensed in that province, and you’re physically located within its regulated market.

Likewise, someone visiting Alberta from another province can use Alberta’s regulated gambling sites. This applies as long as they are physically within Alberta and meet the operator’s registration and age requirements.

Using your Alberta account while travelling

Many operators allow players to create an account, log in, check balances, or manage account settings while travelling. However, real-money betting will generally be unavailable until the operator can verify your location in Alberta.

If an operator is licensed in multiple provinces, you may also be able to use the same app while travelling. However, promotions, available games, account balances, and other features can still differ between provincial markets.

As more operators become licensed across Canada, moving between regulated markets may become more seamless. Even then, geolocation will remain the final check on betting eligibility in a particular jurisdiction.

Location verification near Alberta’s borders

Players living close to Alberta’s provincial borders may occasionally experience location verification issues. If the system can’t confidently determine your location within the province, it may temporarily block wagering.

If this happens, try enabling your device’s GPS, connecting to Wi-Fi, and disabling your VPN. These steps can often help the operator verify your location more accurately.

FAQ

Can I use the same betting app in different provinces?

Often, yes. Operators licensed in multiple provinces may let you use the same app, such as bet365 Sportsbook, BetMGM Casino, and Caesars Sportsbook. However, features, promotions, and betting markets can vary depending on the province.

Can I use a VPN for privacy while gambling in Alberta?

It’s not recommended. Alberta’s regulated operators are required to detect VPNs and other location-masking technologies. If a VPN prevents the operator from verifying your location, you won’t be able to place bets.

Can I bet while visiting Alberta?

Yes. You can generally create an account and place wagers as long as you’re physically located in Alberta and meet the operator’s eligibility requirements. This holds even if you live in another province.

Can I log into my Alberta gambling account from another province?

Yes. You can often log in to your account while travelling, but you generally won’t be able to place real-money wagers until your location can be verified within Alberta.

Why does my sportsbook ask for location permissions?

Regulated operators use your device’s location services alongside other geolocation tools to confirm your physical location in Alberta. Without those permissions, the operator may not be able to confirm your location.
