Alberta is slated to launch iGaming and sports wagering on July 13, with responsible gambling at the core of the soon-to-launch market operations.

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission will regulate the Alberta online gambling market. The oversight also includes an extensive self-exclusion program for players who may need to take a break from gambling.

The AGLC’s self-exclusion program offers a way out

The AGLC offers Alberta players a self-exclusion program to support responsible gambling. It’s a part of its commitment to launching fully regulated online casinos and Alberta sportsbooks.

Players can choose their own gambling exclusion period when entering the program. As of now, players who sign up for the program can choose to be excluded for the following durations:

  • Six months
  • One year
  • Two years
  • Three years

Once registered in the program, players can choose to exclude themselves from any of the gambling services available in the province. These include regulated Alberta iGaming sites and gambling properties with racing entertainment centres.

Players can join the program whenever they want

The self-exclusion program is always available, and players can sign up at any time from anywhere. To register for the program, they must complete a self-exclusion agreement.

The sign-up process requires a full name as given on their government-issued identification. Participants are also required to specify the exclusion period, their preferred gambling services for exclusion, and other contact information.

Identification is also necessary before signing and confirming the agreement. All the information players provide is confidential and will only be used by the AGLC for the self-exclusion program management.

Individuals can also opt in to get follow-up contact at certain intervals, and be contacted within thirty days of their agreement’s expiry date.

Joining the program is a personal journey

Registration for the AGLC’s self-exclusion can only be done by the person who wants to self-exclude from gambling activities. Family members or spouses can’t do it on your behalf.

Note that self-exclusion starts immediately after you’ve signed up. You cannot withdraw from or cancel the agreement before its expiry date.

Players who’ve registered for the program will not be eligible to receive prizes from a gaming facility within the province for the duration of the self-exclusion agreement. They will also be removed from any land-based gambling establishment if they list those venues in their exclusion agreement.

Self-exclusion will be available on launch day

The AGLC offers a clear and actionable self-exclusion program. It will be available to players once the Alberta market launches on July 13. Registration for the program is easy, but there are terms and conditions to be strictly adhered to.
