Alberta’s regulated iGaming market is less than two months away. The organization responsible for overseeing the province’s online gambling market now has a permanent leader in place.

The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) confirmed that Dan Keene officially took on the role, effective April 21, 2026. He had previously been serving as interim CEO.

The move was widely expected. Keene has spent years helping shape Alberta’s gaming industry through senior roles at the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) and through his work helping establish AiGC itself. Keeping him in the role signals that Alberta is prioritizing operational continuity and internal experience as it enters the final stretch before launch day on July 13.

What AiGC will Oversee at Launch

Keene’s background matters significantly. There is much for AiGC to manage once Alberta’s market officially opens.

AGLC is the province’s primary regulator. This body oversees licensing, compliance, and consumer protection standards.

On the other hand, AiGC is responsible for overseeing the market’s conduct and management. This includes entering into operating agreements with approved operators and coordinating the operational side of Alberta’s rollout.

Alberta is expected to launch with several major operators preparing to enter the province, including large international brands already active in Ontario. Ahead of the July 13 launch, operators still need to complete technical integration, compliance checks, and platform testing, with AiGC coordinating the rollout process across approved operators.

Alberta Chose AiGC CEO Already Inside the System

Keene’s appointment reflects Alberta’s decision to keep institutional knowledge at the centre of its launch strategy rather than bringing in outside leadership during a critical stage of implementation.

Keene oversaw areas including technical operations, compliance, online gambling, electronic gaming, player loyalty, and gaming product development across the province. He also helped lead the creation of Winner’s Edge, Alberta’s province-wide casino loyalty program, and oversaw operations for PlayAlberta.ca, currently the province’s only regulated online gambling platform.

Running PlayAlberta gave Keene direct experience with the operational realities of regulated online casino gaming in Alberta. He has already worked within the province’s gaming framework, managed online gambling operations, and dealt with regulatory, technical, and compliance demands.

AiGC board chair Sanjeev Kad confirmed the appointment and highlighted that experience. He noted that Keene’s operational background and market development experience will be vital in launching a market with player protection and social responsibility measures in place.

Final Weeks Before Alberta’s Market Opens

With the launch date now firmly set, AiGC’s focus shifts almost entirely towards execution.

For Alberta bettors, July 13 will mark the first time private Alberta sportsbook and casino operators can legally offer services within a regulated provincial framework. Ontario has remained Canada’s only competitive regulated online gaming market since April 2022, but Alberta is now preparing to become the second.

Alberta has estimated that roughly 70% of the province’s online gambling activity currently happens through unregulated or grey market platforms. A major part of the launch will involve moving those players into the regulated system. Operators must also be fully prepared from day one.

AiGC must manage the transition smoothly over the next several weeks. Its success will shape Alberta’s launch. It will also influence other provinces’ approach towards regulated iGaming in the future.
