Alberta has officially opened registration for iGaming operators, marking a significant milestone as the province moves closer to launching a regulated online gambling market expected to go live in 2026.
The registration process allows prospective Alberta online casinos and Alberta sportsbooks to formally engage with the province’s regulatory framework ahead of licensing.
While a firm launch date has been pushed back from Q1 2026, the move signals that Alberta’s online gambling market is entering a critical implementation phase.
Registration signals growing momentum
Opening registration enables operators to begin preliminary compliance steps while the province finalizes outstanding regulations. Alberta passed the iGaming Alberta Act in 2025, laying the groundwork for a competitive market model similar to Ontario’s, which launched in April 2022.
Under the new framework, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) will continue to act as the primary regulator, while the newly established Alberta iGaming Corporation will oversee market operations and relationships with private operators.
Government officials have described registration as a preparatory step rather than a full licensing launch. Key details, such as tax rates, technical standards, and advertising rules, are still expected to be finalized before the market opens.
Industry interest builds ahead of 2026
The opening of registration is likely to attract interest from many of the same major operators currently active in Ontario’s regulated market. Alberta’s population of more than 4.7 million, combined with strong digital adoption and sports wagering interest, positions the province as a potentially lucrative jurisdiction for licensed operators.
Industry observers have suggested Alberta could become Canada’s second fully regulated iGaming market, providing a legal alternative to unregulated offshore platforms that currently serve many local players.
What it means for Alberta players
At present, PlayAlberta.ca remains the province’s only regulated online gambling platform. A competitive market would significantly expand consumer choice, offering a wider range of iGaming and sports wagering platforms operating under provincial oversight.
As registration opens and regulatory details continue to take shape, Alberta’s iGaming rollout is increasingly viewed as one of the most important developments in Canada’s gambling landscape heading into 2026.
