As of January 13, 2026, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis (AGLC) released the Standards and Requirements for Internet Gaming (SRIG). These new standards allow brands to start submitting applications for operating online casinos in Alberta.
Alberta Plans to Speed Entry for Ontario-based Operators
Many of the major operators currently active in Ontario have begun preparing to expand westward, even though a firm go-live date has not been announced. This is because the published regulations noted that the AGLC will “consider an applicant’s registration in another jurisdiction acceptable to it where the applicant is operating in the same role or function.”
Besides, Alberta’s Minister in charge of iGaming, Dale Nally, recently revealed the provincial government is working with Ontario. The goal is to fast-track the approval process for Ontario-licensed operators.
“We want to make it easy for them to transition to the province, to get rid of roadblocks rather than put them up. There are ways that we can do that, and those are absolutely things that we’re exploring,”
said Nally in an interview earlier this year.
So, we expect to see several of the 48 Ontario-licensed operators join Alberta’s market, alongside ‘illegal’ and ‘grey’ market operators transitioning out of unregulated activity.
PointsBet is the First in Alberta’s iGaming Customer Acquisition Race
After beginning the AGLC iGaming registration process, PointsBet Canada announced the opening of its pre-registration for eligible Alberta residents on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
It’s not surprising that PointsBet is among the first operators to formalize its intentions in the Western Canadian province. The company has already seen impressive growth in Ontario, where it offers sports betting, online casino games, and horse racing.
This move also aligns with its Canada-facing branding. The company is well-known for supporting a strong local workforce and designing its products specifically for Canadian iGaming needs.
Commenting during the news release, PointsBet Canada CEO Scott Vanderwel said,
“We’re excited to introduce our innovative, Canadian-focused sports betting and online casino products to Alberta residents, supported by industry-leading speed, responsible gaming tools, and local expertise.”
At present, eligible Alberta residents can pre-register on the platform. Once Alberta’s iGaming officially goes live, they will receive notification about PointsBet’s launch and can claim an exclusive welcome bonus ahead of the full rollout.
RSI Ready to Branch Out West with BetRivers
The self-described iCasino-first operator and owner of BetRivers Casino, Rush Street Interactive (RSI), has also applied for Alberta licensing. Kyle Sauers (President and Chief Financial Officer of RSI) confirmed this to Canadian Gaming Business.
RSI recorded its strongest quarterly performance in Ontario, with 24% revenue growth in Q3 2025. The company is optimistic about its continued momentum in Canada and hopes to replicate its Ontario success in the Wild Rose Country.
Richard Schwartz, CEO of RSI, also revealed in a press conference last year:
“We’re excited about our planned expansion into Alberta and anticipate launching in that market on day one when it goes live. This represents a significant online casino opportunity that leverages our proven success in similar markets, such as Ontario.”
Betty Canada is Also Targeting Alberta
Known for slots-focused offerings, Betty Canada is hoping to get into Alberta on day one. After seeing a 200% increase in both revenue and player participation, Betty Canada seeks to bring its established Ontario model to Alberta. This will provide a unique cross-provincial experience to Alberta residents.
“We want to be among the first operators entering the province,” said Betty Canada CEO Chavdar Dimitrov to Canadian Gaming Business.
“We’re actively discussing our approach to starting in Alberta and moving to accommodate some of the product changes and compliance requirements. We have a proven formula for Ontario, I don’t think we’re gonna enter the market with any new mix of verticals.”
“One thing we are going to go for is a cross-provincial experience. We would like to make it seamless. We’ll be doing a lot of localization and I’m sure there will be some cultural differences, but we are going to create an Alberta experience that is at least on par with Ontario.”
Several Major U.S. Brands Expected to Make Their Way to Alberta iGaming
Beyond operators already active in Ontario, a number of U.S.-based operators are also expressing interest in entering Alberta’s iGaming market. These include American sports betting market leader FanDuel Casino, land-based and online casino giant Caesars Entertainment‘s Caesars Palace Online Casino, and PENN Entertainment’s theScore Bet.
Other operators offering multi-vertical iGaming products have also signalled intentions to launch in Alberta. These include BetMGM Casino, DraftKings Casino, NorthStar Bets Casino, PowerPlay Casino, and Bet99 Casino—alongside SuperGroup brands Betway Casino and Jackpot Spin.
